If you’ve always dreamed of long, feminine hair but your natural hair would not cooperate, the good news is that with wigs, this is all possible. Or, if you’ve just simply been a fan of shorter cuts for quite some time but are looking for a change, you may find yourself thinking of going much longer.
Before you take the plunge and purchase your first long wig, there are a few things you’ll want to know and remember. By keeping these in mind, you can ensure you make the most of your new style.
You Will Face Tangles
First, realize that tangles will happen. It’s inevitable. As soon as you add more length to the style, you’re going to get more friction taking place between the hair strands both with each other as well as with the shirts or jackets you’re wearing.
This can lead to greater frizz and over time, cause the hair to look more worn. If you used to get 6 months out of a shorter wig style, expect to get around half that – possibly even less depending on how gentle you are with longer hair with this new style.
Does this mean you should forgo it? Certainly not! It’s just important that you have realistic expectations going in. There are plenty of longer wigs at a lower price point that are a great option if you are on a budget and can’t afford to purchase a pricier wig every couple of months.
HD Hair Will Behave Noticeably Different In Longer Wigs Compared To Shorter Wigs
The second point to note is that if you’ve ever tried a heat friendly fiber style and noticed the hair behaved a little differently compared to a non-heat-friendly style, you’ll notice this even more as you go shorter. Heat Friendly longer styles do tend to clump together considerably more so you’ll always want to have a wide toothed comb on you. Don’t leave home without it!
Any long wig requires more combing than a shorter wig but these heat friendly ones in particular will need more TLC. This said, don’t over brush when not necessary as that can also shorten the life. Be very gentle when you do and you’ll be just fine.
Don’t Be Afraid To Play!
As you get the longer wig, don’t be afraid to play with the hair! Long hair gives you plenty of great options, so use that fact to your advantage. Experiment and see what types of looks you can create. Remember, no one ever expects wigs to be styled in braids, updo’s, or half updo’s, so this is also a great way to fly under the radar if you are feeling nervous about people ‘outing’ you.
Finally, remember that when it comes to long hair, density matters. Make sure that you check the density of the wig you plan to buy before you buy it as that can help you learn just how thick that wig is and whether it’ll be too much hair for you.
If you have a petite face, you don’t want to feel overwhelmed, so a lower density wig – say under 5 oz. is a good place to start. If you like a lot of hair, then try for one over 5 oz. and chances are, you’ll be more than satisfied.
So keep these few points in mind when searching for a longer wig style and getting prepared to wear one. Long wigs can be a great deal of fun and look gorgeous on, but they do require a bit more maintenance and know-how compared to their shorter style counterparts.
